Gulele Garden Goes Gargantuan

Gulele Botanical Garden is trying to lease 225ht of land from the Oromia Regional State on top of the 705ht it already holds.

If the land is granted, the garden will be sprawling over territories in both Addis Abeba and Oromia regional states. It is currently located in Gulele District, bordering the Sansusi area of Burayu Town in the Oromia Special Zone. It has Mount Entoto on one side.

The application for the extra land was made based on the decision of the board of the garden, chaired by Addis Abeba deputy mayor Kefyalew Azeze. Other members of the board, which has 12 people, include Addis Abeba University President Andreas Eshete (Prof) and Mesfin Abebe (Prof), advisor to Addis Legesse, vice prime minister. The board's decision to expand the garden's territory to 930ht meant that it required leasing an additional 225ht from the adjoining Oromia Special Zone.

"We want to develop the garden with the Oromia Regional State," Tekle wolde Gerima, acting executive director of the garden said.

Workers of the garden are now clearing the site from human habitation. Residents numbering 530 are occupying the land.

"We need to build eight blocks of condominiums at a cost of 40 million Br to relocate the residents," Tekle said.

Currently four blocks are under construction at a cost of 17 million Br.

The garden has been designed by a local firm, Abba Architects, and two Belgian firms, Synergy International and JNC Consult. The government of the Netherlands has financed the design of the garden and the construction of the condominiums.

The garden was created for the preservation and study of biodiversity. It required 300 million Br for the first phase alone, out of which 100 million Br is to be requested from the Addis Abeba Administration.

The special zone has not yet been contacted by the garden, but says the question will be considered after it has been presented, according to Haile Tadesse, deputy general manager of the zone.
